Anecdotal evidence suggests that people who have pets are generally happier than those who do not have pets. Pets help us become happier by
  1. being funny
  2. distracting our minds from challenges we are facing e.g. job security, financial difficulties, physical pain that requires medication for relief, etc,
  3. warning us of impending medical conditions
  4. fighting other animals to protect our lives
  5. innumerous other ways as well.
Benefits of being happier include reduced stress in overcoming difficult situations, for example dealing with severe pain due to injury or surgery, stress due to personal finances, etc, etc. This, on its part, has direct benefits for the pet owner, for example...
  • Direct medical benefits of reduced pain-killer medication for example, patience in allowing the injury, surgery wound, etc to heal, which has even further benefits of reduing the risk of the patient pulling off bandages that may result in wound infection, further complicating the healing process...
  • Elevated self-confidence and patience in believing that a stressful situation will resolve itself: a job will come along, a financial difficulty will resolve with time, etc...
  • An alternative form of relaxation by spending time with the pets when one is not in the mood of reading a book, watching the News on television, going to the local entertainment spot, etc...
  • Pets always welcome their owners even when circumstances make talking/communicating with other people difficult
  • Pet animals putting themselves in harms way to protect their owners, for example, recently in Canada a golden retriever attacked a cougar that was about to pounce on an unsuspecting 11 year old boy. In South America, for example in Brazil, stories of dogs attacking anacondas and other snakes (including venomous ones) to protect children are fairly common, and even caught on video. Here the pets' owners indirectly benefit from the happiness of sharing and enjoying the gift of life of a loved person longer.
  • Pet animals, especially cats and dogs, that detect medical conditions in their owners such as cancer and seizures/episodes of epilepsy. In these cases, the pet owners derive their happiness once again from enjoying a extended life span from early detection of the disease, and in the case of chronic seizures due to epilepsy, reduced risk of injury during the fit when the pet warns the owner of an impending fit.
These are but just a few of the countless benefits believed to result from being happier because of one having pets.

The purpose of the People-With-Pets-Are-Happier mailing list is to piggy back and share the joys of pet owners and enrich our very own personal lives. Members of the mailing list will every now and then be sent a link to a video or pictures that a pet owner has made of his/her pets. In so doing, it is hoped that the mailing-list member shares the same joys of the pet owner, and reaps the same benefits that the pet owner has as a result of owning his or her own pets.
