A visitor to a goat show in Brazil did not hesitate to buy a hermaphrodite goat - a male goat that can be milked - when he first came across it. The goat is a clearly a Billy goat. And, translating the colloquial phrase "pai de chiqueiro", implies that it can be mated with a female goat. But, as seen in the video, the scrotum region apparently serves a dual purpose of being a set of udders that can be squeezed to get milk.

Mr. Albertino, the owner of the hermaphrodite goat when the video was shot, decided to buy it when he saw it at a goat show.

In this video, Mr. Albertino is interviewed by Ronald Menezes Junior, a Chef/TV-show-host in Brazil.

Menezes says that the video was shot when he used to work for TV Tambaú, in the city of João Pessoa, in the state of Paraíba, Brazil. The video was shot for one of the shows that he hosted. Menezes is a rather humourous interviewer, and asks Mr. Albertino if the hermaphrodite goat, "is a Brazilian citizen," and if it is "from the state of Mines Gerais". This is akin to a TV host asking you if your pet dog/cat is American, Canadian or Mexican.

As with regards to the hermaphroditism of the goat, there is one line of thought that this may not be a true case of hermophroditism, but a high level of the hormone prolactin. Apparently even human men with high levels of prolactin can produce milk.

On the other hand, the goat in the video gives milk from the scrotum region, rather than from breasts under the belly. This might imply a genetic makeup defect that resulted in the male reproductive organs being messaged as the female mammary organs during DNA construction. Perhaps a DNA test would provide a more complete picture of the degree of the true hermaphroditism of the goat.

In Zoology, the term hermaphroditic is normally used to describe an animal having the reproductive organs of both genders in equal measure and pseudohermaphrodite is used to describe an animal displaying the reproductive organs of one gender in greater measure than the other gender. At first sight, as such, this may be classified as a pseudohermaphrodite goat. However, given that female goats have their reproductive organs at approximately the same location as the male's rectum, one cannot say with certainty that the goat in the video also manifests a female goat's reproductive organs in equal measure as the male reproductive organs. Further, an X-ray or some some kind of medical imaging may be required to determine whether or not the goat has ovaries and a uterus in addition to testes.

As such, without a DNA test and some medical imaging tests of some kind, it is not easy to say with certainty the degree of true hermaphroditism that goat manifests - that is, hermaphroditic or pseudohermaphrodite.

Once again, a big thank you to Ronald Menezes Junior for granting permission for the use of a clip from his TV show. Ronald Menezes Junior can be reached through his YouTube channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/Ronaldmenezesjunior. Brazilians are normally thrilled when someone leaves a comment in English (Brazilians speak Portuguese.) Be sure to leave a comment in English and let Ronald Menezes Junior know that we are delighted with his video.

Thank you for watching.
